How to kick start your business with SEO and SEM?

Summary: A guide that explains the principles of why Serach Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is needed and how to start your business successfully by utilizing SEO & SEM.

Who is this article for?

If you are a webmaster who is about to start his/her first web site or online business, you will probably know that it is not so easy to reach high traffic to your site as well as a high ranking on the major search engines. In fact, these days it takes a lot more work to be done and a lot more time to be spend in order to be successful online, than it had been some years ago. The main factor that influences your success is that most business or web site owners do not know anything about search engine optimization (SEO) and/or search engine marketing (SEM) that might be useful for creating a prosperous online business. These terms (SEO and SEM) are wide-spread, however, a lot of people just know of it as a way to get ranked high in the search engines rather than a way to alter its site to fit perfectly to the search engines rules in order to rank high!

There are scores of webmasters and web site owners who would probably like to know more about SEO strategies in order to kick start their business(es). If you have enough funds to hire a company to do the optimization and marketing work for you, you would probably not sift through the internet and find out more about SEO, unless you are eager to learn more and more. So this article is chiefly for those who just started out with SEO and want to know more about the strategies and techniques to not only rank high in the search engines, but also prosper and do well in satisfying visitors or prospects.

Why do I need SEO & SEM to rank high?

The question is why businesses and web sites do need to spread the word for their web sites nowadays, unlike some years ago, when everyone was about to submit to a few of the established web directories and was seeing a considerable increase in traffic, though no aggressive promotion has been done. The answer is: Some things have changed. The major search engines have developed very complex algorithms in order to find relevant and informational web sites and separate them from the non-relevant web sites. These algorithms appear to be very complicated and not revealed to anybody that does not work for the search engine.

One of the problems is that, in order to reach high traffic and especially high/top ranking, you need to prove that your web site is trustworthy and relevant for the world. Relevancy can be reached through search engine optimization and fresh contents, whereas trustworthiness is reached through the marketing and promotion of your web site to related web sites that are also relevant. There are theories about a so-called sandbox or trustbox by Google, however, they have never been confirmed to be existing for real. The sandbox theory often claims that every new web site is put in a box for a specified period of time, comparable to a probation period. While the site is in the box, it is not ranked well and does not receive a PageRank other than zero. The trustbox theory rather says that, if a web site has several trusted and relevant backlinks from trusted sites like authority sites, it should be released and ranked far sooner.

Whether one of these theories is true or not, fact is that you need to optimize your business for the major search engines and then promote it. The main thought is that you should try to obtain as many one-way links as possible. One-way links, also referred to as inbound links, are links that are directed to your web site, whereas your site does not link back to that site. In past the so-called reciprocal links have been used very often in order to build your linking and prove your trustworthiness and relevancy. However, these days, inbound one-way links are more than appreciated and worth it!

How to approach? How to gain one-way links and kick start my business now?

This is a very complex topic and it is impossible to tell you about all existing and proved strategies and techniques at once. Nonetheless there are some easy but time consuming ways to kick start your web site or business. Before anything can begin, however, you should first optimize your website well in order to comply with the rules to be considered relevant. You can start out right here with that.

After you have done this, promote your web site to (free) web directories first. Web directories provide you with one-way links without the need to link back to them. Well, in fact there are a lot of directories that require reciprocal links back, but those are not the ones you should submit to. At our list of web directories you won't find any such useless web directories unless they offer at least paid options. Submit to SEO friendly free web directories first then go to relevant paid ones (if you have the funds), apart from the Open Directory Project/DMOZ. Then after you have done this quite exhausting work, write quality articles and spread them. Be active in forums. Publish a blog relating to your area and regularly write in it to attract readers and prospects. These are one of the main sources for getting your first traffic and backlinks, which raise your PageRank.

Now go on and find out about the variety of SEO mistakes you can do when optimizing and promoting.
